Taken to LA Hospital, given CPR in ambulance, but no confirmation. BBC feed confirms death, and they're usually last to confirm.

This news has really rocked my world.
So much for the 'This Is It!' tour, which I had tickets to! This Is Shit!
I'd better get a refund or he really will be a smooth criminal.

Stopped; must've gotten enough.
MTV is now playing music videos tonight for the first time in god only knows how long -- all by the same artist, of course. The channel is just another conduit for reality TV these days, of course, but it has not lost touch with its roots. There was a time when the channel was at the forefront of popular music, and back then the M in its name might just as well have stood for Michael Jackson.
Elvis Presley died before I turned two. The Beatles had broken up at least five years before I was born. Frank Sinatra was a old man by that time, known to younger audiences mainly for the "New York, New York" theme. But I was of an age to grow up smack dab in the middle of Michael Jackson mania.
Driving home from work today, I was flipping through the radio stations until I came across one playing "Thriller." I didn't know then that there was any special reason for playing that song today. (I didn't get the news of Jackson's death until I got home.) But hearing it brought back a flood of memories, namely of my older sister bringing home a copy of the then-new Thriller album and sitting on the floor of her room as she played through the whole thing on our Fisher Price record player.
God, how time flies... |

It is no exaggeration to say that Michael Jackson, for better or worse, has shaped what current pop music sounds and looks like.
It's also hard to believe that until "Billie Jean", MTV wouldn't play videos by black acts. Columbia records had to threaten to withdraw every video they had before MTV gave in.
Good call for MTV.
With the emphasis on video and high-productions albums, he set the standards for Prince, Madonna, and just about every pop idol since. Before Jackson, what you sounded like was more important. After Jackson, what you look like is the more critical factor. |

| It's pretty much too late for the jokes given the extensive punning going on on Facebook, but people deal with things in different ways. His music was important to me growing up, he became a freak show and almost without question a child molester, but his music was something else. History will be kind. |

| I can only imagine that this is what it was like in '77 when Elvis died. He was seemingly a lifetime past his prime, no one expected him to make a comeback, and yet no one would have been surprised if he did, because he was a titan even after he became a punchline. He hadn't released an album in eight years, and yet his death is instantly felt like an atom bomb. The world looks a little different today; The King of Pop is dead, long live the King of Pop. |
