Despite an online publishing glitch, here's my tie-in piece for Julie and Julia for the M*. Think on!

Yes, too true. But it is more than just that, you know. The west comes in and starts trying to "improve" things for these poor countries, and in doing so, end up displacing people from their villages. These people have no where to go but to the cities where - surprise, surprise, they have no skills to get employment and become unable to support themselves. They become beggers and drains on their own economy. Had they been left alone to tend their meagre crops and raise their small numbers of livestock, they woudn't be starving today. But what's a bit of food if they've gone from dirt-floored huts to westernised apartments with running water and toilets, right? Too bad they can't pay for the water that they used to get for free from the nearest stream. AARRGGHH!
