I think 5 was a good number. 10 seems like too much of a good thing.

This happened because they nominated five shitty middlebrow movies last year for Best Picture like they've done so often in the past, and they'd like to get some movies that people will actually watch in the show. |

My thoughts exactly. I didn't think about the "splitting the vote" argument, but it makes a certain amount of sense. It could also go the other way. I can imagine a scenario in which 3 Holocaust-themed films, 3 special effects blockbusters, 2 British period films, and three wild cards getting nominated. One of the three wild cards has a better chance of getting winning due to the others splitting the vote. This could give a Slumdog Millionaire or a Crash an edge. |

I don't like it.
The motive is money, it's got to be. It's always money.
I think if ten films can include the tag "Nominated for the best film Oscar" they are all guaranteed to get a higher percentage of viewers. It also means what was already vile cynical plotting regarding release dates will just get worse as more producers try to squeeze in their product just before the nomination deadline.

I think what's really stupid is that it will pit features, docos, animations, non-English lang, all against each other. I'm betting there's some ulterior motive here, but I can't quite figure out what it is.

If there'd been 10 Best Picture nominees last year, I bet Dark Knight would have won. Purely theory, based on not even being able to remember what won last year.
