The challenge this time is to post reviews which respond to those by other people. By this, I mean ones which semantically respond, not ones which only pun on other reviews or ones which are only improved versions of other reviews.

Please post a specific link to each original and response review and give clear spoiler warnings if appropriate.

You are welcome to post existing reviews (although please try to limit it to the best ten at most), but particularly encouraged to write new ones fitting the requirement. This is in fact why I have chosen this theme: people have tended to just pimp their existing reviews in other challenges, but there are fewer existing reviews in this category to do that with.

Like all challenges, this will be completely open-ended, due to the delay in approvals and the fact that inspiration does not come at will. Good luck!

Hmm, generally I am not in favour of 'reviews inspired by other reviews' - whatever way I look at it, it usually ends up more like copying than responding or tributing.

I had one review which played off a Top 100 review from mguyx. I thought it worked really well as an addition to his, but when it picked up 35 votes I started to think that perhaps people were voting for it as though it were an original review, instead of a deliberate play off another review. I ended up Smitheeing it, older and wiser now I would probably choose to delete it rather than Smithee it.

Nevertheless, here is a well known one from koli that was an adaptation of one of mine, that I thought made a beautifully complimentary pair, and I feel that its inclusion on the site actually compliments and improves my review, rather than being a mindless copy. I am not quite articulate enough to explain why I think this one is an exception to the general rule, but I do

Mary, her head, and the state

Koli's did actually have more votes at one point (I think it overtook mine), but it was retroactively declined with 30+ votes as being 'too similar' to mine, before being reinstated (with no votes) on appeal to benj. So I encourage you all - go vote for koli

Sal - I hope this met your requirements

I don't want to derail the thread, but this is why I do not really like reviews that rif off other reviews.

I understand where you are going with your versions Sal, and that you are actually saying something the orignal reviews do not, but I still think most casual reviewers wont 'get' your intent, they will simply see multiple sets of the same review and as a result the imapct of foxy's and Andrew's original reviews is diminished.

Not picking on you - I have acted similarly in the past - but I try hard now to leave others' reviews in peace

Other than adding the multiplicity (which is a good enough reason), mine don't say anything that Andrew's doesn't. However, they specifically allude to his earlier reference, so I find them fine. The others don't imply the existence of thefoxboy's earlier review, but they are improvements to it (Melrose Place is not set in Scotland), as well as again making the point against Gibson, so I find them fine too.

I am the king of campaigning against lazy duplication but so long as it is honest and purposeful, it is valid to reference other reviews.

For example, the response factor is what is good about W.H.L.'s review here.

Hhmmm, not really. Even if yours made Koli think of his (which I'm not sure is the case), they're really just different puns on the same phrase. So if it's a response, it's only in terms of "Isn't it interesting that just one extra letter can make a lot of difference?" rather than anything about the content of the film or the world in general.

Well, in terms of response, the two A Cry in the Dark reviews really do seem quite on point, if you think of it in terms of pet ownership. I did that very thing today: the cat did something bad, which my friend pointed out, and I responded immediately with "Bad kitty!" And TitanPa's review seemed the perfect response to all of the yellow brick road travelling being done in the others. Or at least, that's how I see it.

Oh. And I was thinking responses to the titles of the films. Don't think I have any of this kind of responses.

Yes, I did see what you meant, but you could have said that regardless of whether your friend said anything. So I see your review as responding to the (supposed) actions of the dingo in the film, which happen to be described fittingly in another review. However, it's subjective and within reason people can post whatever reviews they consider apt here.

That's fine. The main point of these challenges is to come up with new reviews. I only haven't submitted any new ones myself because I have had to use my quota up resubmitting invalidly rejected ones.

There must be some which rightly praise Steve Carell that you would like to rail against.

I'll be doing responses to titles in another challenge.

Ah... and maybe a few other actors I don't care much for. Will Farrell, perhaps. And then there's Meryl Streep in some of her dramatic roles (I like her in comedies, however).

Okay, I'll take a look and get back to you on this.
