They Live

One of my all time favorites, They Live (FWFR) conjectures that the world is going down the toilet because it's subliminally controlled by aliens. Featuring one of the longest street fights in cinematic history ('Rowdy' Roddy Piper vs. Keith David), They Live is arguably among John Carpenter's finest hours-and-a-half. This, despite (or perhaps enhanced by) the director's own blues riff seemingly put on an endless sound loop and turned up on the mixer at his own whim.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abbreviated rules (re)borrowed from here to encourage some new entrants .... or old ones back.

The Rules

The first line of a haiku poem has five syllables.
The second line has seven syllables.
The third, and final, line has five syllables.

Example:
First, five syllables
Then there's seven syllables
Last line? Five again.

The Movie Haiku Contest (MHC) is open to every member of the FWFR site.

To enter, all you have to do is think of a Haiku for the current movie, then post into the current thread. Simple as that. Also, haikus may be risque, but nothing explicit please.

Only one entry per person as per The Blevins Rule. However, you are allowed to edit your existing entry until 9pm Tuesday FWFR time.

Voting.

If you have entered the MHC, then you have to vote. If you do not vote, you'll lose 3 points from your total, and suffer from Significant Shrinkage. This could mean the difference between Stardom and a big fat Dumpster Dive.

You do not have to enter an MHC to vote. Vote away. It'll be like a lurker vote!

---------------------------------

For each round, you get to vote for your three favourite haikus. The voting is as follows:

3 pts fwfr a
2 pts fwfr b
1 pt fwfr c
--------------------------------

You may vote only once
You cannot vote for yourself.
You can vote for the previous winner

You vote by sending me your votes in a PM (Private Message) to me.

When the voting deadline ends (9pm Wednesday 02 Sept. FWFR time), the votes are tallied and the top three places are announced.

In first place, with 13 votes (3 3 3 2 2), heh heh, I'm not sure how this happened, but it turns out to be SLUDGE.

Obviously, the aliens, and I am one of them, are still running things.

Just want to say a bit more on this film.

When ever I mention They Live with any enthusiasm, women who are present recoil in disgust.

Why?

The fight scene.

It goes on for too long and makes no sense, they say.

So I just want to comment on this through a different lens.

I don't see it as a director just taking advantage of the only talent Rowdy Roddy Piper was previously known for. I think Piper more than proved his acting ability and did a better job of it than most professional athletes given their screen tests. He managed to make some of the dumbest lines of all time funny. But I digress...

Here is my argument: the fight scene is not about fighting or sunglasses. It is the process of one friend breaking through another friend's wall of denial. Keith David says he doesn't want to get involved. One might conclude he already knows what he'll see, and just doesn't want to deal with it. So making the fight scene ridiculously long (the link above goes for 6 minutes) is necessary. It pushes one's comfort level on purpose.

I like that the vehicle for exploring this was a crappy pair of sunglasses rather than some fancy gadget that you'd only see in a sci-fi movie.

Stepping off the cardboard box now.

BTW, I updated the MHC previous list (the top sticky Movie Haikus post) so it's easier to find in one place again.
