You guessed right first time. We shared a desk. It suited me as I didn't like getting up until lunchtime. Unfortunately it meant that I missed all the foreign language lessons, while Sam missed English (though it didn't seem to do him any harm).

Happy Birthday and as for your ailment, as Dr. Johnson would say "Boswell that ends well".

BTW, hope you lasted longer at Pembroke than the good Dr.

Ah, I see where you're going with that one. No, I didn't go to Pembroke. I went to Lichfield Grammar School, which Johnson attended before his 13 months at Oxford.

Thanks for the birthday greetings.

Thanks. He who is sick of birthdays clearly can't afford to have Kylie sing at his parties.

This reminds me of something Dr Johnson (who went to the same school as me, incidentally, though not at the same time) said: "He who is tired of London is tired of life."

Do bear in mind that he was writing/speaking long before the introduction of Tube trains, bendy buses, smoking bans and congestion charges. These days it's perfectly possible to be tired of London and yet yearn to live to be 120 - somewhere else.

I'm still trying to decipher this greeting. I think I'm grateful.

I appreciate the sentiment, though I'm not entirely sure I'd enjoy the reality of being 120. I suspect the main benefit - apart from the opportunity to go on whatever supersedes TV and talk about the secrets of my longevity (I'll follow the usual pattern and refer to whisky and wild women) - will be the ability to say, during my final months, that I recall the days, a century earlier, in 1975, when the Sex Pistols shocked an unsuspecting world. My other pleasure will be attending the annual general meetings of my pension company and telling them: "I'm still here, you bastards. What do your mortality tables tell you now?"

Thanks very much. I have every intention of recovering quickly (and my recovery will be speeded by these good wishes)and in fact regard this bout of ill health as a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted healthy passage from strength to strength lasting more than a decade.

I might also mention that I blame others for the fact that I caught a cold, whereas I can reasonably take the credit for my long-term good health.

Once back on my feet I shall continue with my policies aimed at improving education, the economy, international peace and global trade.

Meanwhile I have more sniffing, coughing and sneezing to do.

Now that idea I like.

Thanks Sal. And thanks those who've put birthday greetings on my Facebook 'wall'. Unfortunately I can't connect at the moment (something to do with cookies or other celebratory fodder) but I'll acknowledge as soon as the glitch is overcome.

The bad news is that a cold (and the 'non-drowsy', i.e. 'prevent you from sleeping' cough medicine) kept me up most of the night and I've had to take a day off work.

The good news is that this has meant that I've been able to spend a couple of hours loading stuff on to my brand new MP4 player. Yahey! I'm currently listening to The Muse, which is a good way of forgetting cold symptoms.
