I read a commentary on 'Stranger than Fiction' recently which suggested that Luis Bunuel had previously dealt with lots of the ideas presented in that movie, and was a source of inspiration for Charlie Kaufmann...
Discuss! 
I have 'Viridiana' at home, and it's in my 'to watch' pile, but should I be expecting something in this bracket, or something else entirely..? |

Tried watching Stranger recently. Good news: For a change, Will Ferrell (who I believe is a genuinely talented guy) does NOT play a cartoon-y over-the-top ridiculous character. Bad news: boring, boring, boring, borzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |

Interesting stuff.. so the comparison may be a little forced.. looks like the Bunuel movies are a bit weightier than Kaufmann or 'Stranger than Fiction'.
I'll give Viridiana a go in the next few days anyway, sounds like a nice piece of light entertainment to wet my Bunuel beak with! |

Well, I have seen both STRANGER THAN FICTION and a little Bunuel. I think the similarities are only superficial, the way they're both similar to Beckett or Ionesco: a tad, but not really.
Kaufman is a true innovator: we caught a q&a by him last year at Lincoln Center and were amazed by his normalcy; IOW, he doesn't look or sound like Lynch or Burton, both of whom we have also seen discuss their craft on the same stage and who seem to celebrate their eccentricities. |

I haven't seen Stranger than Fiction either, but I did write a term paper on Bunuel's career. |

Agree with BB and I have seen most of his films. Haven't seen Stranger Than Fiction, however. |

Well, I can't claim to have seen every Bunuel film, but I have seen a fair few of 'em and can't recall any that remotely resembles Stranger than Fiction! B. usually deals with the effects of carnal urges especially contrasted to some vain attempt to achieve spiritual purity. It's the contrast that intrigues/horrifies/disgusts him since its constant presence highlights our hypocrisy. Viridiana, for example [which, imho, is a masterpiece] examines the effects of thwarted sexual desire of a man for his wannabe nun niece, his melodramatic suicide, the way he manipulates her life, and how it all goes tragically wrong. He uses sex - whether consumated or not - and various forms of religion to examine the hypocrisy, which is his main focus.
I'd also highly recommend Exterminating Angel, which deals with a group of people at a dinner party who find they physically cannot leave the room. This bizarre premise becomes the vehicle to examine the gamut of human interaction. It's impossible to describe, and it's bloody brilliant!

Can't help. I tried to find some of his flicks a few months back, and the only one I could find for rent was �ngel Exterminador, El.
