Choco/GHcool/anyone, could you please tell me what the best film about the history of Israel is (for a review, not to watch)? Israel in the sense of the Jewish state, not the general geographical area. A history of the Jewish people would do if need be. Thanks!  |

One thing about making a movie from a book is that a good deal of the narration cannot be translated onto the screen - and this was the case with Exodus, thankfully. It really is a very good film (and I'm not just saying that because I adore Paul Newman and he's especially hot in this movie), and I'd say you should make the effort to see it.

I thought the A&E's aren't valid for fwfr (i.e., not movies).
I haven't seen Exodus but have read the book (I didn't like it BTW, the writer Leon Uris came across as a very unpleasant Jewish-supremacist racist bigot, hopefully this wasn't apparent in the movie). It's specifically about the formation of the state of Israel, so would fit the requirements nicely. |

Yeah, I haven't seen all of Chocolate Lady's suggestions, so I couldn't tell you how good or bad they are as films, but I have heard of them all and (to the best of my knowledge) they are all about the history of the modern State of Israel. |

Actually, the best one probably wouldn't be considered for this site. Its called Pillar of Fire (or "Amud Ha'Esh") and is a mini series.
I can't vouch for the A&E documentary Israel: Birth of a Nation since I've never seen it, but it would be accepted here.
There's also A Woman Called Golda which is actually a very good made for TV movie, and would be accepted here (even if it is a bit inaccurate).
Of course, the easyest answer would be the Hollywood classics, Exodus (with my adorable Paul Newman and includes a friend of mine in the cast - Zipora Peled), and Cast a Giant Shadow with Kirk Douglas.
That should hold you for now, I'm sure.
