Easy A
Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci, great; Thomas Haden Church, great; Amanda Bynes, great; Emma Stone, really great. Tucci and Clarkson do a fine job as wacky but uncliched and not-too-annoying parents, and Church's drawling cynicism is as winning as usual. I love how Bynes always gives her fullest to any role; a two-dimensional character such as hers here would usually be a bad step for an actor but I don't think it will do her any harm. And Stone is excellent, carrying the film with a rich performance combining comedy, drama, awkwardness, sensuality, strength, vulnerability and all the other things a good actress should have. I know that some people cannot bear these sort of unrealistically witty Juno-esque teenagers, but if I wanted to see typical teenagers I'd loiter around on the street. I wish they wouldn't always cast mid-twenties men as high-school boys, though: they just look ridiculous.
4/5, just because the film isn't that original other than the central premise. |
